So my juggling skills are desperately lacking.
As you may have noticed, I was not here on Friday as I said I’d be…. dropped the ball, I did.
But that’s okay. It’s okay to drop the ball every now and again just as long as you pick it up and carry on!
So let us carry on, shall we?
What I want to do today is add to our list. I want you to tack on to your list of roles and responsibilities anything you would like to make time for on a weekly basis. Perhaps you long to learn a new skill but haven’t the time, maybe you’d like to make time for exercising regularly, or it could be a hobby you love but cant find the time for. Whatever it is, write it down but try to keep your expectations in the “real world” please. Don’t go adding 10 different things – you will accomplish nothing and feel frustrated. Try to limit this to no more than 3 additional time-consuming activities.
Once that is done, go through your list and try to estimate the amount of time you would need each week to successfully fulfill each role. Go ahead and do that with the items you just added, as well.
EXAMPLE: If I want to commit 1 hour to my daily devotions and prayer, then I will put 7 hours next to my role as Daughter of the King.
I understand not all roles can be neatly organized and scheduled. You don’t know when you will be called upon to be a sister or friend. But let’s try to make time for that anyway. I don’t get to see my little sis nearly as often as I’d like. She is one of my favorite people in the whole world and yet I often don’t have time to spend with her. This must change!
Okay, now that that’s done I am going to ask you to do something VERY inconvenient. Please stay with me as this next step is vitally important.
This week I want all of us to assess where our priorities lie based on the time we are currently giving them. This is going to be painful but it MUST be done. For the entire week we are going to keep a log of all our time spent. I want you to carry your log and your watch with you wherever you go. Log everything! How long was your shower? How much time did you spend getting dressed each morning? How long did you use twitter, talk on the phone, study your Bible, read to the kids, mop the kitchen floor…. EVERYTHING!
Every time you begin a new responsibility or series of actions, write it down. Look at the clock and log the time you began and then log the time you finished. I don’t care if you were only on Twitter for two minutes… log it! 10 2 minute Twitter sessions add up and you need to become aware of where you are spending your time.
Please do not alter your schedule or habits because of the log. Let’s be completely honest with ourselves – it’s the only way we will be able to refocus our daily activities. If you forget to log something just give it your best & honest guess at how long you spent on it.
Let’s try to be as consistent with this as we can for this week. As I said before, it will be annoying and inconvenient, but it will serve us well in our effort to juggle the chaos and achieve more.
Good Luck To You!
