You know that song A Spoonful of Sugar from Mary Poppins? Well, there’s some wisdom to be had in that song. I believe everyone can benefit from a little playfulness while doing some dreaded chores… especially children. I’ve come across a few ways to motivate the kids to do chores and have a good time while they’re at it.
Please understand I do not mean for these ideas to be used as a way to coax the children into doing what they are told. Nothing can replace the importance of a child learning obedience, however, there is nothing wrong with them having fun while diligently going about their chores.
CHORE DICE

This is a fun way to keep the kiddos guessing at what comes next, while making them feel like they are playing a game.
Grab a pair of wooden blocks at your local craft store (mine are 2 inch) and paint them fun colors. On each side, write a chore you want them to accomplish on a regular basis. At chore time, have the child roll the die to see what task he/she will do first. You can even write a couple of fun things on there to encourage them to finish one task so they can roll again.
METHOD ACTING
I started doing this with my kids in an attempt to motivate myself of all people!
This is as simple as finding your childhood imagination and playing a little make-believe. For example, you can be the mean captain on a pirate ship, while they are shipmates swabbing the deck. Maybe they are super heroes on a mission to complete certain tasks in order to save the world. Or perhaps you are the wicked step-mother working your Cinderella’s to the bone in order to keep them from going to the ball.

Sometimes just dressing the part makes the chores seem more fun. But the key is to have fun.
I know this is not realistic all the time, but why not give it a try every now & then to shake things up a bit?
You just might enjoy it, too!
